Come and create for WGT's Community Panto Project!

The installation will be a life-size "Grand Antiques Shop" and it'll have lots of rare and beautiful objects displayed.  The shopfront scene will be surrounded by a shimmering display of hanging fans and Chinese Lanterns.  It'll be displayed on the main staircase at WGT from 1 Dec into New Year.

What will be provided at the Workshop?

Chocolate, biscuits and lots of bling!  400m metres of sparkly sequins, ribbons, lots of gold and red braids and cords, beads and sequins, 500 tassels, buttons, metallic cards and other stuff.

What can you make?

A simple or sophisticated festive decoration will be extremely welcome!  It could be a fabric based shape or more structured like a rectangular lantern using our card templates.  These will be firm enough to wrap fabric around.

The colour theme is burgundy and gold for the Antiques Shop, with red on the Chinese Lanterns.

What else can you make?

We'll be bringing some rare(!) and exquisite(!) items that will be "on sale" in the shop.  If anyone wants to turn an item into an object of beauty, we'd be delighted!  see here for photos & info

We'll add photos of items, as we source them, over the next few weeks so check for updates.

What if you can't stay for the whole session?

If you can only stay an hour or two, you might enjoy making a simple paper Lantern from 4 Chinese Lucky Packets - see below - and embellish it with fabulous tassels, beads, cords and stitchwork on the pre-printed designs. The lanterns are quick and easy to make.

What do Participants need to bring?

  • normal sewing tools like scissors, needles, pins, etc
  • any gold, black, maroon, wine, burgundy fabric, thread, trims, etc you want to use

What else will Heath House Studios bring besides the bling?

  • chocolate
  • card lantern templates to adhere embellished or embroidered panels to
  • PVA glue, acrylic paints, dbl sided tapes and glue guns
  • bondaweb, iron, board (note to self: don't let RT near it at any cost)
  • pencils, rulers, scissors, scalpels, squared paper, pins

Rare and Exquisite items to work magic upon . . .

Jewellery Box, Pendants, Bangles

This has a boring brick red covering.  Can you make this look more splendid?  It'll have sumptious jewellery pouring out of it.  Can you make a divine pendant or a beautiful bangle?

Chairs

One of these chairs will be included in the display.  If someone wants to embellish the one chair and keep it after the display is taken down, that's great.  We're very happy for you to have both chairs to keep.  We'll bring tools to pop off the covering and put things back together.

Handbag

The handbag has a very simple fabric liner.  If the liner is removed (for replacing), the whole bag should lie flat to work upon.  We'll bring paint in case you want to change the colour of the handles or slats.  The hanging cords could be a lot more fun, and the "thing" they're hanging from too.  This bag could be much more alluring, in either a restrained or an elaborate way.

Tables in need of runners or panels

The first tables have a sunken top which would accept a decorative panel mounted on card.  The second set would suit a runner across the top, maybe hanging long down the sides.  Don't forget, we're bringing tons of tassels and beads - some weight at each of the runner would work well.  It would be useful for the runners to be plain in the centre where they sit on the table top.  This will allow us to display small decorative objects on the table top.

A Well-Travelled Suitcase and an Elegant Evening Bag

Do suitcases have interesting tales to tell?  This one has nothing to say for itself - yet!  Are you the person who'll bring it to life?  We'll bring paints if you want us to paint it a different colour.  It's locked at the moment - maybe there's an old parched letter inside that tells of its travels . . .

The elegant evening bag is simple and sophisticated.  Can you gild the lily and turn it into a beautiful accessory?

Gertie Millar - The Countess of Dudley

Gertie Millar was a millworkers daughter who trod the boards.  She became Countess of Dudley.  We like the military-style costume in the first photo.  Would anyone like to give these high-boots some smart braided decoration with sumptous beaded tassels?

The second photo is quite different!  We'll bring some plain paper fans to be decorated in a subtle sophsticated manner - or simple or gaudy - we'll love whatever's conjured up!  Another option is to "do a Lydia Bennett" and pull them apart to replace the paper with embellished fabric.

Instruction Manual for Flying Carpets

We'll make an old book that needs a sumptious cover - photos coming soon!

An Encyclopaedia of Magic Lamps

We'll make an old book that needs an enticing cover - photos coming soon!

Shop Sign - "New Lamps for Old"

A lamp image is needed for the shop sign - photos coming soon!

Exotic Slippers

We'll bring templates to make a pair of very simple flat slippers.  The fun will be in embellishing the uppers! photos coming soon!
